BBetween social media, video games, and our many other excuses for more screen time, we may have more reason than ever to worry about our cognitive functioning.
Both our attention spans and memories seem to shorten, which has a decidedly negative impact on everything from our job performance to our love lives.

And since most of us can't stand being away from our screens, it's no surprise that we've been looking for supplements that can help mitigate our memory loss and improve our focus.
The good news is that some real discoveries and real scientific breakthroughs have led to all kinds of discoveries that can help us improve our minds.
The bad news is that for every one or twoRealProgress, there are legions of scammers, charlatans, and quacks spreading all kinds of hoaxes and making quasi-medical claims that aren't actually backed by any evidence.
I recently spent a couple of weeks trying it out.Onnit Alpha Brain Nutritional Supplement, a nootropic that claims to aid mental processing, improve focus, and aid memory to figure out if its claims are legit or full of bullshit.
Read on for the full results of my Alpha Brain review and to find out if this is a supplement worth spending the money on.

In-Depth Onnit Alpha Brain Review

Summary: What is Alpha Brain?

Healpha brain supplementis a nootropic developed in 2010 by the founder of Onnit, Aubrey Marcus.
Much of the public attention has focused on Marcus's boyfriend, Joe Rogan, who is a partner at Onnit.Marcus suggested developing a nootropic.
Nootropics are any form of supplement or medication that claims to improve the executive functions of your brain.
In the case of the Alpha Brain, it does this by producing more neurotransmitters, the chemicals responsible for transmitting information in and out of the brain.
Alpha brain waves and "flow"
Increasing the production of neurotransmitters is said to help improve concentration because it can produce more alpha waves.
This makes it easier to fall into what is called a "flow state", a term he coined.Psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi.
Flow is the most focused and productive state your mind can be in. During this time, you are effortlessly engrossed and focused on a particular activity to the point where you don't even realize how much time is passing.
Alpha Brian Ingredients

The main ingredients of Alpha BrainThey are distributed in their three different proprietary blends, each purporting to serve a different function.
The first is called Onnit Flow Blend, which claims to boost the production of alpha waves and contains:
- L-Theanine, an amino acid that helps release dopamine and serotonin;
- L-Tyrosine, another amino acid that helps produce adrenaline;
- phosphatidyl leserine, a type of fat that plays a role in maintaining cell function;
- oat straw extract (this is where it starts to sound a little less scientific), which the Onnit website says may help boost cognitive function; AND
- Cat's claw extract (this is where it starts to sounda lotless scientifically), a compound said to be "derived from the bark of an Amazon rainforest vine" that promotes cell integrity.
The second is called Onnit Focus Blend and consists of:
- Alpha-GPC, possibly the main component of Alpha Brain, a compound that acts as a precursor for acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that controls nerves, muscle cells, and endocrine glands;
- Huperzia Serrata, another not-so-scientific ingredient that is said to help stop the breakdown of acetylcholine; AND
- Bacopa, a herb that according to Onnit helps to receive nerve signals
Finally, the third “blend” is called Onnit Fuel Blend.
But it's less of a blend and more of a single ingredient, L-leucine, a derivative of resveratrol, the plant compound found in grapes.could help fight aging.
Is Alpha Brain safe?

In the United States, brain supplements are classified as other supplements:
They are considered food, not medicine.
This means that none of the positive effects that supplement manufacturers impose on their products need to be tested in clinical trials or tested by the Food and Drug Administration, nor can we know for sure if there are any widespread negative effects.
Although supplements don't have to go through clinical trials before they can be sold, Alpha Brain has been around long enough.ESsombrerobeen testedin various studies, as well as their individual ingredients.
Mar WebMD(which are perhaps the three most disgusting words in the English language), Alpha Brain's key ingredient, Alpha GPC, "is potentially safe for up to 6 months when used as directed."
But the site goes on to point out that:
"It can cause side effects in some people, such as heartburn, headache, dizziness, and rash" and "There is not enough reliable information to know if Alpha-GPC is safe to use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding." Please stay safe and avoid using it.”
So if you are pregnant or have another medical condition, you should stay away.
But even healthy adults should consult their doctor before taking dietary supplements or medications.
My experience with Alpha Brain
Everything I've explained so far is based on information you can find elsewhere online.
But now we come to what happened when I tried Alpha Brain for myself.
As a blogger, I was drawn to the idea of stimulating my brain cells and getting into a state of flow, as I am often faced with tasks that require sustained focus, such as writing in-depth blog posts.
(And before you roll your eyes, the answer is yes. I realize there are more complex tasks to findThe best trimmer to shave your private parts— but I challenge you to think of one that requires more attention.)
The initial reaction

I took Alpha Brain at the recommended dose and took two pills a day for 45 days until the bottle was empty.
It would be a stretch to determine Alpha Brain's response time right away, but I was surprised at how quickly I started to notice some effects.
It was like that first cup of coffee in the morning: It's not like you're going to get going after the first sip, but it doesn't take long to feel something.
For me, it was similar to the calm I feel after I finish meditating or when I listen to music on YouTube or Spotify to help me focus.
It's not like I suddenly became a zen master, but about half an hour into taking the pills, I was definitely a bit closer to the calm, cool, and productive end of the spectrum.
And, in some ways, it was better than caffeine (my go-to brain booster) because it didn't have the same crash or exhausting effects you often get with coffee or energy drinks.
the lasting effects

Fortunately, I did not feel any negative side effects, either immediately or after a few weeks of taking it.
But I did notice an improvement in my mental clarity and cognitive performance (or at leastperceivedthere is an improvement).
I have always had trouble staying focused and focused throughout the day.
I'm pretty good in the morning after a cup of coffee, but then everything from my willpower to my ability to focus really starts to wane from there.
I took Alpha Brain in the morning around 11am and noticed a marked improvement in my productivity throughout the afternoon.
Arguably helped me double my productivity by giving me a second window of focused and focused time.
I woke up, had a cup of coffee and worked as usual for two or three hours with concentration.
But right around the time that I would normally start to drop, I took Alpha Brain, had lunch, and then sat at my desk and did it.Othersfew hours of concentrated work.
If someone was watching me, they might not have noticed any difference in my behavior.
(it's not likethis movieUnlimited, where Bradley Cooper takes a brain pill that somehow inspires him to do the sameget a good haircutYdress better.)
But the proof was in the matter: while takingalpha brain, I was able to post 25-30% more articles than in an average 45 day period.
Other people's experiences with Alpha Brain
Scientific: a double-blind study
As mentioned above, there have actually been some third-party studies on Alpha Brain, which means we don't have to take Onnit's word alone when judging its effectiveness.
And the available research suggests that I'm not the only one who has benefited from Alpha Brain.
2015,a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studypublished inJournal of the International Society of Sports Nutritiondivided 63 healthy adults into two groups; one group received Alpha Brain for six weeks while the other group received a placebo.
The results were clearly positive:
"Use of Alpha BRAIN® for 6 weeks significantly improved current verbal memory and executive functioning in a group of healthy adults aged 18-35 compared to controls."
Anecdotally: Onnit Alpha Brain reviewers on Amazon

Much less scientific, the Alpha Brain has been around so long that thousands of people have tested it, giving us plenty of anecdotal data on how it works on a large scale.
FromIt has received more than 10,000 customer reviews on Amazon., 73% have a five-star rating, with thousands of users confirming that it has helped improve various cognitive abilities and mental functions, including mental speed, mental clarity, memory function, and more.
This collective user experience is anecdotal, but the numbers are large enough to suggest that, overall, Alpha Brain benefits many, if not most, of its users.
Nootrópicos-Controversias
HeThe Federal Trade Commission actually sent lettersto various manufacturers of nootropics as early as 2019, warning them of potential marketing scams and false advertising.
But it's worth noting that the warning wasn't meant for Onnit, the creators of Alpha Brain.
Instead, it focused solely on companies making claims about the potential use of nootropics to treat some very serious diseases, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, heart disease, and even cancer.
There is no evidence that nootropics can be an effective treatment for this or any other condition, and Alpha Brain has never claimed any effects beyond brain function.
But it's impossible to talk about nootropics without mentioning it, as the quacks and snake oil salesmen I mentioned above simply can't resist making some ridiculously unsubstantiated claims.
(There is a special place in Hell for anyone who tricks the sick into selling them a fake cure for a real and devastating disease.)
Diploma
Is Alpha Brain legit?
Based on my own anecdotal experience and the research I've done, I have to say yes.
Carryalpha brainit has successfully helped improve my focus, concentration and productivity.
Can I say for sure that this improved performance was the result of the natural ingredients in the pill and not just the result of the placebo effect?
Of course not.
But whether a placebo tempted me to focus more or the pill legitimately put me in better brain condition, the result was the same:
I felt more focused, had more focus, and was able to do so much more.
If focus, concentration, and short-term memory are things you've struggled with in the past, then Alpha Brain is definitely worth a try.
